Washington, D.C. - Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution offered by Congressman Joe Donnelly honoring Reverend Theodore Hesburgh “for his contributions to the civil rights movement in America, his tireless work to reduce the threat of nuclear conflict, and his efforts to secure the peaceful resolution of international conflict.” The resolution, introduced on September 27th with 103 original co-sponsors, passed the House by voice vote.
“Father Hesburgh is a committed educator, a spiritual leader, an author, an advocate for peace, and a strong voice for equality and opportunity in America,” Donnelly said today in support of the bill during debate on the floor of the House. “In addition to his contributions to the Catholic Church and the University of Notre Dame, Father Hesburgh has worked tirelessly in service to the American people as a champion for social justice and the peaceful resolution of conflicts across the globe.”
Tonight, The University of Notre Dame will hold a celebration in honor of Father Hesburgh at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. At the tribute, a portrait featuring Father Hesburgh and Dr. Martin Luther King at a civil rights rally at Soldier Field in Chicago will be unveiled and added to the gallery’s permanent collection. Donnelly will also present Father Hesburgh with a framed copy of the resolution passed by the House today.
