Washington, D.C. -Today, Congressman Joe Donnelly released the names of Hoosiers in his district who are owed tax refunds from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The agency reports that there are over 1,600 Hoosiers who have unclaimed tax refund checks totaling over $1.2 million.
"I hope my constituents will take a minute to visit my website to see if the IRS owes them money, and claim what they are owed,” said Donnelly. “Hoosiers pay too much in taxes, and that needs to change.”
In most cases, a tax refund goes undelivered when the IRS or U.S. Postal Service does not have the taxpayer's current address on file. In order to receive their refunds, taxpayers must simply update their addresses with the IRS. Hoosier taxpayers can receive their tax refund by:
• Visiting Congressman Donnelly’s website and clicking on the “Tax Refunds” button on the top right to see if they are on the list and, if so, find out how to claim their money.
• Visiting IRS.gov to access the tool “Where’s My Refund?” Taxpayers can check the status of their refunds and provide instructions on how to resolve delivery problems.
• Dialing the IRS "Where's My Refund?" service at 1-800-829-1954.
Donnelly has been a strong supporter in Congress of tax cuts for Hoosiers. He voted in favor of The Temporary Tax Relief Act, which would provide an additional standard deduction--$700 for joint filers and $350 for individuals--for state and local real property taxes paid or accrued by taxpayers who claim the regular standard deduction. Further, this bill would prevent approximately 34,000 hard-working, Second District taxpayers from facing an unexpected tax increase this year under the AMT and would do so in a fiscally responsible way.
"Middle-class families desperately need the government to step in and ease their tax burdens. I am doing my best to make sure this happens," said Donnelly.
