Congressman Donnelly Votes to Allow Hoosier Taxpayers to Keep More of their Money

Washington, D.C. -  Yesterday, Congressman Joe Donnelly voted in favor of H.R. 3996, The Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2007, which passed in the House. The measure will hold harmless thousands of Hoosiers who otherwise would have had to pay the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). The AMT was created in the ’70s to ensure very wealthy individuals do not avoid paying income tax, but because it is not adjusted for inflation, the tax now threatens to squeeze middle-class families in Indiana.

“I was proud to vote in favor of a bill that would allow approximately 34,000 taxpayers in north central Indiana to keep more of their hard-earned money,” said Donnelly. “With the increasing costs of energy, healthcare, and education, the last thing Hoosiers need is to be paying higher income taxes. This legislation provides the necessary tax relief.”

The Tax Increase and Prevention Act was approved by both the House and Senate this week and will now be sent to the President who is expected to sign it into law.
