Statement from Congressman Donnelly on Congress' Failure to Reauthorize Expiring Law Governing Electronic Surveillance

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Donnelly released the following statement after Congress failed to reauthorize an expiring law governing electronic surveillance:

"Nothing is more important to me than protecting our nation from those who would do us harm. Unfortunately, a majority of House members opposed extending the existing law—for another 21 days—until a permanent extension could be negotiated.

Just after the vote to extend the current law failed, the House voted on a resolution that enables the body to adjourn for the upcoming recess period.  I voted against that resolution and for staying in session until we’d brought the FISA matter to resolution.  Work this important should not be left undone—not even for a week.  Congress and the president must put aside their partisan differences and get down to the business crafting a permanent new FISA law.  I’m hopeful a deal will be struck in the coming days and we’ll all be called back to Washington to vote on it."
