South Bend, In—Today, Congressman Joe Donnelly visited REAL Services where he was recognized by AARP Indiana for his work on behalf of seniors to ensure their inclusion in the economic stimulus package, which was signed into law last month.  As a result of Donnelly’s efforts, 20 million retirees who mostly depend on Social Security will receive a rebate check of $300.

“Retired seniors who have worked hard, paid social security taxes, and are now struggling to make ends meet in a slowing economy deserve an economic boost,” Donnelly said. “It was important to me to make sure seniors were included in the economic stimulus package.”

As part of their visit, Donnelly and June Lyle, AARP Indiana State Director, distributed information packets on how to file a tax return, which is required to receive a rebate check. This information was made available by AARP.

“I want to make sure that seniors know how to claim their tax rebates. AARP has done a great job of providing resources to seniors to walk them through the process, and my goal is to ensure that they take advantage of this information. As always, my office stands ready to help,” Donnelly said.

“AARP appreciates Congressman Donnelly’s leadership in highlighting the need to include older Americans in the stimulus package,” said Ms. Lyle. “We’re also happy to work with him to make sure that everyone who is entitled to a rebate actually gets one.”
