Healthcare
One of my top priorities in Congress is to expand access to quality and
affordable health care for Hoosier families. Right now, more than 46 million
Americans have no health insurance, including over 870,000 in Indiana.
With health care costs rising, the situation is very difficult for families,
employees and those providing medical care.
There is not a simple solution to the many health care problems facing
our country. I am committed to working in Congress to improve our current
health care system and to make it work better for everyone.
First off, we need to make sure that employers continue to provide health
insurance to their workers. Just as individuals and families are feeling
the pinch of ever-increasing health care premiums, so are businesses.
Many of these businesses are not obligated to provide health care to
their workers. As more employers choose to drop coverage for their workers,
our bad national health care problem becomes worse.
We must work with insurance companies to keep premiums affordable. Also,
we should encourage doctors and hospitals to make better use of new technologies
both to improve the quality of care and to reduce administrative costs.
Preventive health care will be an important part of any comprehensive
health care fix. We spend billions of dollars to provide care to those
who have fallen ill with preventable diseases. Government should partner
with the private sector to increase awareness of the benefits of regular
exercise and good nutrition and encourage insurance companies and employers
to promote health lifestyle habits. Congress should act to provide health
care to more children, so that they can be immunized, receive regular
check-ups and, as a result, greatly increase their chances of living
a long and healthy life. |
